A Celebration, a wonderful occasion, a life time commitment, a very special and unforgettable moment in a person's life, that is marriage. Marriage is such an occasion a vow for life, with love, understanding, sharing and faith.  A complete celebration with fun and food with relatives and friends, but we are not left are we ? You try this out and tell arathi... how much you liked it 🙂

MILK POWDER BURFI
RECIPE SOURCE: Arathi of yummy tummy

INGREDIENTS:
200 grams Milk Powder
1/4 cup water
1 and 3/4th Cup (200 grams)  Sugar
50 grams Ghee
1/4 cup of Chopped Pistachios for topping

METHOD:
Take a plate or a pan grease ghee to it and leave aside until needed.
Take a deep pan / wok melt ghee, Add milk powder and fry in a low flame for few minutes.
Then in the same wok or a deep pan add 1/4 cup water or add water until the sugar is immersed completely.
Let it boil for few minutes around 8 to 10 minutes, that is until it reaches one string consistency, you can check this by first dipping  your finger in water and immediately into the syrup, be very careful as it will be very hot.
when you stretch the syrup between thumb and forefinger a string is formed from the sticky syrup this is one string consistency.
Bring it to low flame and Immediately add the roasted milk powder, mix well together so it is completely incorporated into the syrup and fry for few minutes add a little bit more ghee if you need.
Be careful so it won't get stuck to the pan.
pour this into the pan and flatten it and chop few pistachios topping it to decorate.
Leave for few minutes, cut into desired shape and serve.

Here is a lovely photograph from Art Royale photography, who have a collection of wedding of photos.., beautiful clicks.... Enjoy....

Hi friends, After a long time I decided to post something to start with! this is long awaiting post from my blog, I know lot of you would have posted this recipe, I made this on January 11th as it marks the 27th Stanza of Thirupaavai, and is called Kudaarai vellum.

I belong to a community called Iyengars (Vaishnavites), as we all know that we follow calendars according to Lunar or Solar, Tamilians follow the Solar calendar and so they call their month in different names and follow a Tamil Panchangam for auspicious events like Marriages, Upanayanam etc., So accordingly this month is Maargazhi Maasam (December 15th to January 14th), This month is very Important to us as People get up very early in the Morning and Pray to God for Moksha (Salvation).  So, why is this in this month....
It's a little story which I will not be able to write it down here as it will take a lot of space!, Godai or Andal as she is called is one of the 12 Alvars, She Devoted her whole life in trying to reach God! as a small girl and in the end she marries him that's how she at last reaches his abode If you click on to the link on her name you can read the story of her, She Prays to Lord Vishnu in the month of Maargazhi, as it is the coldest month and her penance is nothing concerned to religious rites but she says as the month is so cold getting up so early in the morning and following these simple things in her life she tries to please the Lord It is kind of Tapas (Penance) in her own way and yearns for the everlasting Service to the Lord , she has a written a Poem of 30 Stanzas which is called Thirupaavai, also called Paasurams in Tamil in praise of Lord vishnu and it is a part of the Divya Prabandham, a work of the Alvars.
Each song is sung each day during this month, and unmarried girls try to follow the little things she describes as kind of penance to the Lord to get Good Husbands!!, Vishnavas sing these songs to bring Peace, Prosperity and Divine Grace towards reaching Moksha (Salvation).
In the 27th stanza, she comes out of her Penance and Dresses up nicely and makes this sweet Porridge offering to the Lord, she even describes how this sweet should be...
She says '' Today is the day she will come out of her Vratham and adornes herself with beautiful jewels and clothes and will make Ksheeranam with milk and Jaggery and lots of ghee, wherein the ghee will flow down to her elbow when offering it to the Lord'', So that is how this Shakkarai Pongal should be made with lots of Ghee!!.
Well, as the days went by and People became health consicous, nobody wants to make Pongal that way!, but still we do get Sweet Pongal as Prasadam in temples the way she describes :)).

So here is my version of Sakkarai Pongal....

SAKKARAI PONGAL (SWEET PONGAL)

INGREDIENTS:
1 to 1 and 1/2 of Jaggery (use Paaku Jaggery / Unde Bella)
1 Cup of Raw Rice
1/2 Cup of Green Gram /Hesaru Bele / Paitham Paruppu / Moong dal
1 tsp of Cardamom powder
A Pinch of Pacchai Karpooram (Edible Camphor)
1 and 1/2 Cup Milk
1 and 1/2 Cups of Water + 1/4 cup Water
1/4 tsp of  Nutmeg
2 tbsp of Cashewnuts
2 tbsp of Kishmish/Raisins/Dried Grapes
1/2 Cup of Pure Ghee / Clarified Butter (increase it more if you enjoy eating ghee)

METHOD:
First of all in a wok add a tsp of Ghee and fry Green Gram into Golden colour, which gives a nice aroma around the Kitchen.
Then In a thick bottomed vessel take the washed rice and Moong dal with 1 and 1/2 cup of Milk and 1 cup of Water and either cook it directly on the stove if you are using a thick bottomed vessel (Vangala Paanai) or Mud Pot, I made this in a pressure cooker, Cook dal and Rice with milk and water close a lid to the vessel and pressure cook up to 3 whistles, ( If cooking directly I close a lid to the vessel as we know that when milk boils it froths up and spills out so it is better to close it with a lid and put a ladle in it, which helps the liquid not coming out ).
Meanwhile take Jaggery and 1/4 cup of water (use Jaggery according to your tastebuds) and allow it to completely dissolve it in the water, then leave it for 2 minutes allowing the impurities to settle down,  filter the Jaggery as it usually has impurities, take the filtered Jaggery in a vessel and start to boil it, until it reaches a ball consistency you can test this by dropping a tiny bit into a cup of water, where you can see that it doesn't spread out into the water but you can see it well and where you can bring it into a ball (next time I will try to take a photo tutorial of this).
It is important that you do this even after the cooker cools because when it reaches ball consistency it becomes hard and you have a add a little bit of water to keep in this consistency until your cooker cools, It's just the timing no need to panic, Once the whistle is gone, take the cooker out from the stove and keep it on a table top on a stand (as it will be very hot!), otherwise the heat from the stove keeps the cooker still warm for a bit longer.

Either way you can do it, like I said I cooked the dal and Rice in a vessel, use a thick bottomed vessel for boiling the Jaggery , Now to this add the cooked Rice and mix well, start boiling this whole thing in a medium flame stirring now and then to keep an eye on the cooking mixture so that it doesn't stick to the bottom of the vessel, as it will be a very thick once they all start coming together thick and lovely start adding Ghee it kind of swallows all the ghee, You can add a Cup of Ghee if you want and your Chakkare pongal will be very delicious as we are very health conscious we do not want so much ghee Leave around 2 tbsp of Ghee and add remaining Ghee from the 1/2 cup. I have mentioned add the other Ingredients Cardamom powder, edible camphor, nutmeg powder mix and switch of the stove and close a lid.

Now Garnish Chakkre Pongal, take 2 tbsp of ghee in a small pan once it is warm enough add chopped Raisins and broken cashewnuts fry them, Raisins becomes swollen and cashews turn golden in colour, keep the stove in a low when doing this and don't burn them add this to the Pongal mix well.

Serve hot and Enjoy....
Notes: It is better to use Round Jaggery (Unde Bella), Check Valli's Blog for Jaggery Varities from this Recipe, she describes each one of them with a lovely click too!!
updated : Adding more ghee will not make the Chakkare pongal hard and keep it more moist, Anyway reheat in the MW for a minute before eating.

Another One from Asha's Gujarati cuisine, which was interesting to try out, She said that it was a Great and authentic Gujarati delicacy. whatever it is my H loved it as much as I did, don't look at her photo and wonder how does it ever compare with mine, I made it like a halwa and popped it into a plate, Check out her blog at the link above to look at this beautiful click of sweet carved out into a heart, then make it and eat it, it's really nice not too sweet and good for health as it is made with wheat flour!,  searching for Gujarati recipes I stumbled into an other blog called Enjoy Indian food by Meera, who has got loads of Gujarati dishes dished out in her kitchen, and writes about the same sweet, and explains why it is called Gol papdi even though it is not Gol (round) in shape, she says Gol means Jaggery. Try out her version too...

SUKHDI OR GOLPAPDI

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 Cup Ghee
1 Cup Wheat flour
3/4th cup Brown sugar/ white sugar/Jaggery
1tbsp of poppy seeds
1 tsp of cardamom powder

METHOD:
Heat Ghee in a kadai, when hot add poppy seeds, then add wheat flour and start stirring continuously until you get a nice aroma of a roasted flour, then add the sugar and mix well, add cardamom and 2 tbsp of milk, it starts leaving out the sides, flatten it and cut it into squares and you can decorate with cashew, raisins or blanched almonds.
I removed it before it became more like a cake, It was a like brown mass, and later it became hard not to bite though, It was delicious. I used to both brown sugar and Jaggery to make this sweet
I am sending this to simply food who is hosting the flavours of Gujarat.

Hi Everybody, Hope you are all doing well, Days have been quite busy!, thank God!, school has reopened and I think life is going to back to normal, (should I say quite mechanical) whatever it is days are going to be different, at least for my kids, they will now be out from their couch!
I thought we will be left with a little bit of summer still, but there is no chance that's not going to happen, the gloomy weather is already on its way!, trying to tell us in its own way that the winter days are going to come soon.
It's raining from morning and I was thinking of bringing all my plants Indoors, well, I haven't told you have I :), During summer I really wanted to enjoy growing somethings in my garden, and I did really enjoyed it, I forgot blogging and thought I will do this first and later on blogging!, and it was such fun!, I will post some of my pics of my plants next time.
When this delightful lady announced this event, or shall I say every time she announced, I really wanted to give it a try, and I would just gape at all those lovely ladies, creating dishes in different shapes, colours, sizes, quantities etc. I wanted to give it a go!, but never really thought about it, My friend had come to visit me and when he left I thought I wanted to make some sweet quickly while I was cooking my traditional menu!, I just had mangoes which were too ripened and that was then I thought of making halwa, so I started of but twisted it a little bit by adding Quinoa making it more healthier. Anyway even though I made this before the deadline, I could never post it at all, and she is too quick for me, I thought of posting it the next day and ask her add me into her event, she already posted her round - up. well, even then thanks valli with your cooking with Microwave rubbing off on me I made this lovely Halwa and everybody enjoyed it!, only my son who ate 3/4th of it said, there was something weird!, I think the quinoa I tried to hide was something different for him!!
well, here goes the recipe..... and thanks to valli making me do something in Microwave very bravely :))

MANGO - QUINOA HALWA

INGREDIENTS:
1 Cup Mango Pulp
1/4 Cup Quinoa
4 tbsp of Milk
3/4 th Cup Sugar
3/4 th Cup water
1/4 tsp Cardamom powder
1/4 Cup Raisins
1/4 Cup Ghee
METHOD:
First of all I took around 4 mangoes, peeled the skin and cut them into pieces and blended them into a puree in my mixie, and it came up to 1 cup.
When I was cooking My MW was in high (800W) all the time.  Then  I cooked Quinoa in the Microwave with 3/4th cup of water, I Microwaved it till 7 for 2 times (I have shown a Photograph of my MW timer so you would know where the 7 is!).
Then I added Mango pulp and cooked it one more time till 7 one more time.
Then I added sugar and milk and cooked it 2 more time on 7 again
It became mushy and the whole thing was soggy and I added 2 tbsp of Ghee and mixed it well, and put it on 7 timer again and cooked again.
It started becoming thicker and starting to a halwa consistency after one more time on the 7 timer.
This is my MW timer I just wanted to show where the 7 on my timer was!
Then I took my MW pyrex bowl poured the left over ghee and raisins and put the timer on 2, Oh! the Grave mistake I made, but in the half that is when it came in between 0 and 1 I had to switch it of, as the house started getting a burnt smell the Raisins started burning!!, so, I could save some of them and I had to throw some to the bin as they were burnt, then I Garnished Halwa with Raisins and some Almond slices and served it hot. Take an other look at my cute little MW Halwa.
I am sending this to Lubna and Yasmeen's Ramdan event fasting to feasting, as I feel with quinoa it is a healthy diet too. and to Nivedita's MW - fruits event which of course was started by Srivalli of cooking for all seasons. Hope all of them like my MW - Halwa...., bye for now and will come back soon... take care..

Of course, who doesn't know Ghasa-ghasa paayasam, and why am I posting this recipe now!!, I do make this a lot and I have never been able to take photos of them anytime, Like my Bisibele Bath!!, I keep forgetting almost all the time, Today my kids were back with their dad from their Bank Holiday Monday Vacation, and I was stuck with my daughter at home, thinking I will make her sit and study as her exams start from coming tuesday and is upto June end!!, I am completely gone bonkers , and keep screaming and shouting at her most of the time, she has started to hate me I think.
She is a kind of person who takes everything very calmly, sometimes which makes me wonder why is she like this, I remember my Dad used to say when she was a little baby around 2-3 months old , she used to just stare at the ceiling or somewhere God knows where and was  very quite, smiling and  very sweet baby, He always used to tell me when Ramakrishna Paramahamsa went  he must have left her and gone !!, I used to laugh and he used to tell me I am really serious, why does she stare like that completely blank she sees through you, I wonder and want to know what she might be thinking!!, well, we never knew what she was thinking and still I do wonder what goes on in her mind.
I never remember her throwing tantrums or talking with a childish or should I say baby talk with some letters being disappearing or give a stress or streched or sing along way when they talk which Aishu never did !!, when she started speaking at the age of 10-11 months she used to speak very fluently and we were quite surprised, she always used to be a very quite child, always loved to read books which she still does. Yesterday when we went to the centre she said I have got a wishlist of books and want to buy them I said let's see if we can get some here in the mall, we could buy only one book ''20 thousand leagues under the sea'', the other books she couldn't find, ''Catcher in the rye'' was another one, which she told me that they wouldn't sell in the shops as it is banned. she wants me to read that book, I still haven't had the chance, another book I have been suggested by her is ''To kill a Mocking bird'', I have to soon read these books for her!!!. she has asked me this time when she goes to India she wants to buy Mahabharata and Ramayana, she is now reading War and peace. God!!, she is a serious reader.
She has never been a trouble to me in any ways, she doesn't gets tensed up for her exams and tells me be cool ma, don't worry I will do alright, and takes everything very calmly, I get scared and she tells me to take a breath of fresh air, and  second  girl says breath in breath out, mom and don't worry everything will go well, but, that one is not at all like my eldest, she gets tensed up but she is like a girl with time management skills, she keeps alarm with anything and everything that she has to finish !!.
Oh! now I have left everything in HIS hands and pray she does well in her exams and her ambitions gets fulfilled. Best of luck to her future and God bless her always....
Coming back to the recipe, I saw this event hosted by Priya of easy n tasty recipes who started the CWS event and this is her month of seeds and it was Cardamom, I thought two in one, kids would enjoy and kheer delight and I could as well participate in the event. so....here is my recipe, this is H's favourite sweet and I keep making it often.

KHUS-KHUS KHEER/ GHASA-GHASA PAAYASAM/ WHITE POPPY SEEDS SWEET DRINK

INGREDIENTS:
2 tbsp of Poppy seeds/ Ghasa-ghasa/ Khus-khus
10 Almonds*
10 Pistachios*
10 Cahew nuts*
1 Cup Coconut milk
1/2 cup freshly grated coconut
A pinch of edible camphor/ paccha karpooram
2 pods of Cardamom
A fist full of Rice (2 tbsp of Raw Rice)
1 and 1/2 ltr of milk
150-200 gms of Jaggery (use jaggery according to your sweet tooth!!)
METHOD
You can use coconut milk by extracting it from the fresh coconut or as sometimes I just grind freshly grated coconut with the other ingredients and make the kheer
First of all soak in hot water poppy seeds, all the nuts and rice, leave it an hour or so until they are well soaked.
Remove husk from the seeds.
Next Grind all the above said ingredients into a smooth paste, mix this paste with 1/4 cup of water.
Meanwhile In a 1/4 cup of water boil the grated jaggery until it dissolves then filter and keep it aside.
At the same time Boil 1 and 1/2 litres of milk and set aside.
In a large container boil the filtered Jaggery syrup when it starts boiling add this ground paste and keep on stirring otherwise it will stick to the bottom of the vessel in a few minutes you will see that it  starts forthing up, do not stop as the kheer starts to thicken and if not careful it might start sticking to the bottom.
Then add the boiled milk lower the flame, Then add well powdered cardamom seeds and paccha karpooram/ edible camphor and stir continuously fort few minutes, keep on stirring for around 5 minutes,
you can see bubbles forming at the edge of the container, then put off the stove other wise it starts curdling and your kheer will be spoiled.
Serve hot or cold
Mum always said Drink Ghasa- Ghasa paayasam and sleep well!!
* You can reduce the quantity of the dried fruits or you can completely omit them and just make it with Khus-khus and coconut.
Just use less than a pinch of edible camphor, very little might be more !!, It has a very strong smell some people do not like it, so you can totally omit if you don't like the smell.
I also like to send this valli's Thanda Mela.

Oops!!Athisseyama Athirasama!!, that's what I felt when I made this!!, It was and became a great challenge to me, believe it or not I made it three times, I have 2 lots of Mav left in my fridge!!, how does it sound, well I have planned to use them in different ways now!!, coming back to the recipe Srivalli of Spicing your life who started the Indian cooking challenge asked us all to prepare Adirasam before the dead line date, even though I did twice it flopped, I was so upset  I really wanted  it not get dispersed in the oil, and come out well, so I did it again, the third time and this is how it turned out!!, it was not actually flat and the way Adhirasam would look like it was kind of poori but cooked well inside and flaky!!. As valli had posted 2 types and asked us to post, the recipe which we used, I used this recipe to do this.., for the best results and how really they look like with the same recipe check Jayashree (not me!! :))), valli and Lata's blog.

ADIRASAM/ATHIRASAM/ARISELU

INGREDIENTS:
Raw Rice : 200 gms
Paaku Jaggery: 250 gms
cardamom : a pinch
sesame seeds: 2 tsp
Ghasa Ghasa/Poppy seeds : 1/4 tsp
METHOD:
Soak rice for 6 hours and shade dry it. It should not become dry it should still have some moisture in it., you can either grind this to fine a fine powder using your mixie or give to mill.  The rice flour should have that texture of soft and wet feeling, when you take a handful of rice flour in your fist it should retain your fist shape. (This kind of mav is made for maavillaku ), This is very important because if the flour is very dry it wouldn't come out well.
Get all the things ready when you put the Jaggery for cooking
Take water that is enough to dilute Jaggery. Dissolve the jaggery, Remove any impurities that may be present then again cook till the paakam is ready. The consistency is very important here, paakam should be of  3 thread consistency, for this the paakam to check if the consistency is correct, my aunt told me in her exact words take a small bit and drop in the water it should make ''tan '' sound!!, what she means to say is that you should be able to make a small ball out of it, and it shouldn't spread out not even a little bit. That means you have achieved the 3 thread consistency.
Remove from fire and poppy seeds, cardamom powder and sesame seeds then add Rice flour little by little without any lumps with continuous mixing it should turn into a chapati dough consistency, it is always to have more Rice flour, in case you may need extra flour, or it might be left over too which can used in other ways.
The flour should not stick to your fingers, Take a plastic ready make it into balls and press them flat to a palm size and fry them in hot oil one by one Turn it and cook on both the sides, and drain them on kitchen towel and serve them.
Mmm.., Love it!!, Valli made me do this, thanks valli for this lovely athirasams!!
Take another peek at my athirasams
Can you see the flaky middle and my little pooris!!

Hi, all at last my Jamoons made it into the blog!!, It all started as you all know that srivalli of cooking4allseasons started this Indian cooking challenge and this month's challenge was making jamoons from scratch, that is we had to make it from Khova, I took this recipe from the yum blog by two people Latha and Lakshmi, this was the first time I visited their blog, and they have wonderful recipes!!, just check their blog for some more delicious dishes!!, valli had three recipes the other two were Indo of Daily musings and Alka of Sindhi Rasoi, check out their blogs too, I have decided I will try their versions next time when I make jamoons again.
I thought of writing this in the end but let me write it now as you would have all gone through all the ICC bloggers who have already posted the jamoon recipe.
My verdict: Just follow what the yum blog says very carefully otherwise you would end up as I did the first time, I just read through the recipe and with over confident, let the khova, for a few minutes say around 20 to 25 minutes and then started making the jamoons and LO!!!, they just started disappearing slowly in the oil and I felt like crying and somehow I finished all the dough and put it in the sugar syrup they stared dissolving and I was left with small marble sized jamoons with large mass of them too!!, well, this I did 2 weeks back and decided to post it on the deadline that was the end of last month, but when valli changed the posting date, I was so happy that I could try one more time, and did it yesterday and here I am with lovely gulab jamoons, carefully read the recipe properly followed the instructions and completed the challenge, that was quite a challenge here are lovely jamoons.
That is daughter's bowl who has a very sweet tooth, she initiated that she would take the photos and eat them as well, (The last time the disaster jamoons were well taken by both dad and daughter who finished off even it did not had a jamoon shape!!) Thanks to them.

GULAB (LESS) JAMOONS

Ingredients:

  • Khova -1 and 1/2 cups
  • Maida - 1 cup
  • Sugar- 1 cups (If you want excess cup that is floating jamoons increase by a cup)
  • Water - 1 cup  (increase if you're increasing sugar
  • Cooking Soda - 1 pinches
  • Cardamon - 3 pods
  • Rose water - 1 tbsp
  • Saffron leaves - a few
  • Oil - 1 cup ( for deep frying)

METHOD:

  1.  Combine sugar and water in a flat bottomed broad pan and simmer on a low heat until sugar dissolves.
  2. Add cardamom powder and saffron leaves and remove from fire.
  3. Knead khova, maida and soda and quickly shape into balls
  4. Heat oil on a medium flame. Fry the jamuns till golden brown over a low to medium flame, keeping oil temperature uniform. Oil should not smoke.
  5. Drain the jamuns and soak in the warm sugar syrup.
  6. Serve the jamuns after half an hour.
Tips:
  1. You will achieve correct consistency for Jamoons  syrup when  1 cup of sugar dissolves 1 cup water over low heat.
  2. Only when the syrup is ready, mix the Jamoon dough. Since the dough has soda, if its kept aside the Jamoons will disperse while frying and will not hold well.
  3. Right temperature of oil of utmost importance to get soft Jamoons.
  4. Never refrigerate Jamoons. Jamoons when refrigerated will shrink and become hard. Jamoons will stay fresh for 4 days when stored in air tight containers.
  5. If you like you can add two drops of rose essence to the syrup to make it Gulab Jamoon

This is a sweet I always liked it is so sweet, but this is the first time I ever tried and my children enjoyed it so much, waiting for hubby when he comes back, what he would say !!, I particulary made this sweet for the RCI - Parsi cuisine, Lakshmi's RCI this october event was announced to be hosted by Meera of enjoy Indian food.  she had given some web sites to look into for parsi cuisine, I got this from http://parsicuisine.com/ they have some lovely recipes, I found that some of them are just like the Indian cuisine, and there were few more sites from which you could things about parsis their living, culture and food and it quite educative to read, thanks meera for this event and we enjoyed this sweet too..., well it doesn't look like the one shown in the photo there !!  they look fabulous in that blogspot, check out.

NANKHATAI

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1/2 cup Superfine Sugar
  • 2 tsp yogurt
  • 2/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup fine semolina (suji)
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • A pinch of Cream of Tartar
  • A pinch of Baking soda
  • 1/2 cup Ghee (Clarified butter)
  • Chironji & almonds for decorations (I did not have so I did not use it)
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
METHOD
  1. Take Ghee, sugar & yogurt cream it nicely (saati hidiyodu as we say in kannada), rub it nicely it becomes until fluffy.
  2. Now mix all the other ingredients in a separte bowl except for the decorating nuts
  3. Now mix all of them together well , it will not be like a chapati dough but little softer than that might be like a cookie dough much softer.
  4. Actually the parsi cuisine says take it in a scoop and put it on to the tray & proceed to bake,
  5. As I did not have the kind of scoop or spoon which is shown in the blogspot i just rolled them into small balls and pressed them like cookies.
  6. One more thing I did was, I watched the video on http://varehvah.com/ where Mr.sanjay thumma shows how to make these and shows the different ways you can make it,
  7. I took his way of making double coloured one like I have done, I parted the dough into two, to one of it I mixed cocoa powder
  8. I rolled 2 small marble sized balls joined them together and rolled them into one and pressed them into a cookie shape and baked them on Gas Mark 2 for 20 minutes
  9. They were absolutely good to eat.
I am also sending this to Sweet celebrations from Mansi of fun and food cafe, I don't remember how I tumbled into her blog, I still need to explore her blog, just saw it today morning and when I saw the event I wanted to post as I had already done this, hope she accepts mine too..,

Today is Thiruvaadipooram, this is the day Aandal (Godai) was born, As Aandal was found in the earth she was called Godai, just like Seetha, she was an Ayonije (not born from a womb),  They say that she was not a imaginative character but they have found that she truly lived and like meera she thought vishnu was her husband and married him ! She was born in Srivalliputur in Ramanathapuram District of Tamilnadu, The place still has the Tulasivana ( Holy Basil garden). In the temple  these all still exist there Her father periyalvaar and Godai where they prayed God Vatapatrashai (sri krishna), and depicts that she lived.  Aandal  with her love towards sriranganathar gets married to him, the temple where she gets married to him is in Thiruchanapalli. She was also called Neeladevi as they say that she was Mahalakshmi's avatara, She was also called Shudikudutta Naachiyaar as she always made a garland for him and use to wear it on her head and see herself in the mirror and then she used to send it to the temple.
Then she did a vratha which is in the song form, of how she prayed him to attain him and it is called Thirupaavai, and it is in 30 stanzas or paasharas, These songs are sung one each day in the month December which is called Dhanurmaasam in Tamil, The temples in south of India, like the vishnu temples get closed very early these 30 days, and song is sung everyday.., these songs tell how she did her vratha each day and how she prayed sriranga, even today lot of girls do this vrata to get a good husband & their married life live long, some of them sing this to attain the grace of moksha, and to fulfill lot of their wishes.

MANGO-PAPAYA RAVA KESARI

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup Chiroti Rava ( fine Semolina)
  • 1/4 cup Mango pieces
  • 1/4 cup Papaya pieces
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup Ghee (as required)
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 to 1/2 cup water
  • Kesar colour (optional & I did not use it )
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • A pinch of Paccha Karpooram (edible Camphor)
  • 1 tbsp of dry grapes ( ona drakshi)
  • 1 tbsp of cahewnut pieces
METHOD:
  1. Take a wok, add a tsp of ghee and fry semolina until it smells good and then take it out and keep aside.
  2. In the same wok add water and allow it boil, meanwhile take the chopped fruits in a bowl and just cook it for a few minutes in the microwave, just that they become soft and mash them. So that they are completely mashed but you could little pieces in it, so when you are eating you could bite into some pieces of the fruit.
  3. In the boiling water add this mashed up fruit and sugar and allow it boil, so that the sugar dissolves
  4.  Then add the cardamom powder, nutmeg, edible camphor ( I have not used here as I did not have it in stock!)
  5. Then add roasted rava to it and mix well so that their are no lumps in it, and close it with a lid, keep the fire in a very low flame, and allow it cook for few minutes
  6. Then take out the lid and add Ghee, as much as it takes, Rava keeps on absorbing ghee so much you might need 1 to 1/4 cup, as I do not eat so much ghee I use little quantity of ghee and when giving it to my kids I pour 3 to 4 tbsp of ghee on the hot kesari and give them!
  7. Take a small wok heat a tbsp of ghee and when it is hot add grapes & cashews and fry them, keep  the flame low, when doing this so that the cashews do not become too roasted, or fry them separately.
  8. Now Garnish the rawa kesari with it and serve hot or cold.
Oh! it was absolutely delicious as we used to get pieces of fruits too in it, Actually I thought I will do poli (obattu) but changed my mind,  Actually I was as usual rummaging my fridge, I found these 2 half pieces of fruits I thought of first indulging them myself as always whenever I see a fruit !, then I suddenly thought let me try out something with it, Seeing this Mango Mania and srivalli's Mango Round-up ! Hope you all like and try it out too...
It was quite amazing that it had a keshar colour (orange) too..., but it did give a orange coloured finish.
