I too followed this recipe. I felt the jaggery qty mentioned was too much and added more flour to the dough. I think thats why it got fried in strands in your earlier attempts.

I make them often and so it did not pose a challenge! the final try has shown good results! It always depends on the quality and quantity of the vellam and then the pagu consistency.
